REASON FOR THE EVENT

After 23 years of the LRA war in northern Uganda, the farming communities were forced into internally displaced people camps (IDPC), not forgetting to mention the loss of able bodied human labor force that was either abducted or destroyed by the warring faction.
These actions left agricultural land unattended to, also rendering the communities of northern Uganda; food insecure, not forgetting multiple after effects associated with this problem e.g.
Increased susceptibility to illness because of lack of proper diet
Prostitution (commercial sex), which has increased the infection rate of HIV/AIDS since many women give into commercial sex in order to raise money to feed their households because they lack the capacity to farm.
Early girl child marriage, among many families as a means of raising income for the girl child’s family etc.
Food security means having, at all times, both physical and economic access to sufficient food to meet dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. It’s for such reasons that Apple Concepts Ltd found it necessary to develop the code named “ACHOLI FOOD AND CULTURAL GALA 2011”.


Objectives of the agricultural and cultural gala

Specific objectives are to present to a large audience (farmers, educational sector, Private entrepreneurs, corporate companies, business fraternity, policy-makers, donors, international institutions):

• Animal raising, animal sale and exhibition

• Production means for agriculture

• Agro biodiversity

• Handicrafts

• Agro industrial processing

• Activities of projects and international organizations

• Cultural heritage etc.


Main activities and attractions

1. Animal raising, sale and exhibition:
Improved piggery
Animal fair/sale: cattle, goat and sheep.
Animal contest/exhibition.
Poultry for both local and high breeds.

2. Production means for agriculture
Agricultural equipment (SCV, hand-tractor, tractor, thresher, huller,
Pump…)
Animal foodstuff and animal care
Seeds: rice, maize, legumes,
Fertilizers: mineral and organic

3. Agro biodiversity
Local foods & dishes
Seed exchange between farmers
Local products: rice, tea, fruits, coffee, NTFPs

4. Handicraft

Local products: umbrella, craft wood, sisal and weaving,

5. Agro-industrial processing

Food processing: local farmers products
Industrial processing: honey, Shea and sun flower oil.

Dance and traditional songs
Acholi war dance etc.


Participants

Main participants include: smallholders, private entrepreneurs, private business individuals, educational sector and several departments of World Food Program, World Vision, Food and Agricultural Organization, USAID, Private Sector Foundation Uganda, NAADS, NFA, Women and Youth groups.
(This agricultural fair is open to anyone involved and/or interested in the agricultural sector and agro biodiversity but farmers are the first target group.

Therefore, participants from projects, international organization and governmental agencies should display and present concrete and practicable experiences and tools.



 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
• To promote positive modern agricultural/farming methods through alternative means.
• To empower the communities in Acholi region through media messages, leading to reduction in food shortage among them.
• To contribute to the reduction of famine in the northern region.
• To provide along with other stakeholders better ways of farming that will generate enough income for the families in Acholi region, regular reassuring radio messages provocation through media.
• To revive the positive heritage and culture in Acholi region.


 RADIO MESSAGES
The Airwaves as a conduit for information and medium for propagating change cannot be over emphasized. We develop radio messages to mobilize the public to attend the event. With spot messages and on air programs in different FM stations in Acholi region will reinforce the campaigns on Food Security in the region.

 JUSTIFICATION FOR THE EVENT
Famine/food shortage is more than a health problem; it is a social, economic and a development problem. Although the government and other implementers have tried over the last decade, the people of Acholi region remain vulnerable and hence the high demand to improve on Agriculture through modern methods.
This project seeks to provide a forum in which the challenges of food shortage among the target audience can be discussed by the beneficiaries with the aim of coming up with possible solutions. It also seeks to impart life skills in modern agriculture/farming through radio messages.

 HOW IT WORKS!
Apple Concepts Ltd liaises with the local Government leaders, Cultural leaders, Youth groups, Women groups, Existing farmers associations, and other implementers to seek partnership for the communities to participate in the event “ACHOLI FOOD AND CULTURAL GALA 2011”
The event will be held on 23rd to 25th September 2011 in Gulu town, Pece Stadium. Apple Concepts will then invite guest artists and the speakers chosen to speak at the event “ACHOLI FOOD AND CULTURAL GALA 2011.
Two months before the mega event Apple Concepts and the sponsors mobilizes for the event through promoting it on different stations and also putting up posters at different premises. The sponsors for the event appear on the posters and are mentioned in the adverts aired on radio.
To attract crowds to the event Apple Concepts Ltd sets up for music to be played at least 2 hours before the event start. The “ACHOLI FOOD AND CULTURAL GALA 2011” program is then run by Apple Concepts group and the main sponsors as emcee.
“ACHOLI FOOD AND CULTURAL GALA 2011” is spiced with Acholi traditional/ cultural dancers, drama’s, music interludes, live gigs (performances) from Entertainers / musicians and sponsors messages to market the sponsors products & services.
“ACHOLI FOOD AND CULTURAL GALA 2011” is climaxed with the guest speaker’s remarks and a Q&A session with the theme: “Improved Agriculture / Farming and Food Security for better Living”. It is then concluded with more music and dance.
This “ACHOLI FOOD AND CULTURAL GALA 2011” will be part of Apple Concepts Ltd annual event celebrations. We anticipate an audience of more than 10,000 people at the event.
